Collectables Care & Display Guide

In this guide

Collectables are often kept for years, displayed season after season and sometimes passed between generations. A little care can help preserve their appearance and make displaying them safer.

Handle pieces deliberately

Before moving a figurine, sculpture or village piece, check where its strongest support points are. Avoid lifting detailed pieces by thin accessories, branches, wings, signs or other projecting elements. Where practical, use two hands and support the main body or base.

Keep original packaging

Original boxes and fitted packaging can be extremely useful for seasonal storage and future transport. Keep inserts, supports and identification labels together with the item where possible.

Control dust without over-cleaning

Use a soft, dry tool suitable for delicate surfaces and avoid harsh household chemicals unless the manufacturer specifically recommends them. Painted finishes, applied decorations and textured surfaces can react differently to moisture and cleaning products.

Think about sunlight and heat

Long periods of direct sunlight can affect colour and finishes on many materials. Avoid placing valuable display pieces beside strong heat sources or in locations with repeated temperature extremes.

Plan electrical village displays carefully

For powered village pieces, use compatible power supplies and follow the manufacturer's instructions. Keep cords organised, avoid overloading power points and make sure ventilation openings are not blocked by scenery or fabric.

Store with the next season in mind

Take a quick photo of complicated displays before packing them away. Label boxes by collection or scene, and avoid placing heavy items on top of fragile packaging. A simple storage system makes next year's setup faster and reduces unnecessary handling.

Keep records for important pieces

For higher-value or sentimental collectables, retain the SKU, purchase record and any manufacturer information you received. This can make it easier to identify the exact piece later.

Always follow the manufacturer's specific care instructions where they differ from general guidance.
